“Understanding Salvation- How to Get It Right”   6/29/08

Matthew 19:16-26

VBS ADVENTURE- Story of the Rich Young Ruler… CHOOSE JESUS!

POINT 1- In understanding how to be saved, some espouse a wrong STANDARD

A.     The rich young ruler misunderstood the standard of GOODNESS

(His standard was external; Ps 14:1-3; 1 Kings 8:46; Eccl 7:20; Isaiah 64:6)

“For there is not a just man on earth who does good And does not sin” Eccl 7:20

“There is none who does good, No, not one.”  Psalm 14:3b

ALL OTHER RELIGIONS OF THE WORLD believe being good is the way to God.

B.     Jesus shared with the young man the standard of PERFECTION

(Matthew 5:48; Leviticus 18:5; Galatians 3:10; James 2:10; Hebrews 10:14)

C.     The young man was bold enough to follow the standard of HIMSELF

(Compare Matthew 5:21-anger, 27-lust, 33-vows, 38- revenge, 43-loving others)

HE WAS SINCERE!

Going    God expects us to see ourselves as sinners and needing of a Savior!

POINT 2- In understanding how to be saved, some make a wrong DECISION

A.     Those who desire to be saved must be willing to surrender EVERYTHING

 (Luke 9:23-25, 14:25-33; John 6:28-29; 2 Corinthians 5:15)

“Whoever does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.”  Luke 14:33

B.     The young man was not willing to put Jesus first and was LOST

(Luke 16:13; John 3:18; Rom 6:23; Deut 6:4; Mat 22:37-40; John 3:36)

“Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire,

and covetousness, which is idolatry.”  Col 3:5

Could the man have followed Jesus without GIVING AWAY His money?  It’s Jesus’ way or the Hi-way

Going  God expects us to remove ANY hindrances that we put in front of God!

POINT 3- In understanding how to be saved, some have wrong THINKING

A.     Jesus speaks about the impossibility of the rich men being SAVED

(1 Timothy 6:6-10; James 5:1-5; Luke 12:15-21)

B.     The disciples believed wrongly, but with God all things are POSSIBLE

(Deuteronomy 8:18; Proverbs 10:4, 22; Job 1:10; Salvation- John 6:37-44)

Going  God expects us to see that salvation only comes through His power!
