Rabbi- my great teacher; Talmid- completely committed disciple or “learner”

 

“For You have magnified Your Word above all Your name.”  Psalm 138:2

 

POINT 1- True disciples will be committed to KNOWING the Text.

 

 

A.   Jesus as a Rabbi LEARNED the Text  (Luke 2:42-43)

 

B.    Jesus as a Rabbi LIVED the Text (Matthew 4:4; Numbers 15:37-41)

 

C.   Jesus as a Rabbi TAUGHT the Text (Matthew 5:17-18).

 

D.   Jesus as a Rabbi PRAYED the Text (Matthew 6:9-13).

 

E.    Jesus as a Rabbi DIED to the Text (Luke 24:26-27; 1 Cor 11:1, 15:31)

 

Judaism has four ways to know and understand the text.

1) Peshat- plain reading; 2) Darash- homiletical; 3) Remez- hint; 4) Sod-mystical (Kabbalah)

 

“What must I do to go to heaven?” Example (Philippian Jailer, Acts 16)

 

Remez Example 1- Matthew 21:12-17 (Mat 21:46 they tried to kill Him)

 

Remez Example 2- Mat 11:1-11  (Mat 21:9,23:39; Ps 118:26; Zech 9:9;

                Isaiah 29:18-19, 35:5-6,61:1-2).

 

Remez Example 3- Luke 19:1-10 (Lk 19:47 they tried to kill Him; Ezek 34:11)

 

Going           Are you committing your entire life to knowing God’s Word?

Then Jesus said to those… who believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.’”  John 8:31

 

POINT 2- True disciples will be committed to TRUSTING the Text.

Luke 8:41-48

A.   Before the woman could trust in the Text she had to KNOW IT

(Malachi 4:2; Matthew 9:20, 6:56, 14:36).

 

Going           Are you committing your entire life to trusting God’s Word?

“So shall I have an answer For I trust in Your Word.”  Psalm 119:42

 

“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.”  Hosea 4:6 (James 4:2)

 

Jesus is looking for some disciples who will commit to His actions, teachings, and Text.  Will you come?   (Matthew 11:28-30)
