INTRO- Romans 9:1-5
Rabbi-
my great teacher; Talmid- completely committed disciple or
“learner”
POINT 1- True disciples will be committed
to the Rabbi’s life ACTIONS
A. Eleven out of 12 apostles
(plus 7 women disciples) were from GALILEE
(1) Very religious region (Luke 13:1-3; Acts 5:37);
(2) Bethsaida, Chorazin, Capernaum- largest synagogue- on Via Maris
(Matt 11:21); (3) Beth Sefer- up to 12 years old. Girls learn
Deuteronomy, Psalms, Proverbs, Leviticus. Boys memorized Torah (see Luke
2:42-52); (4) Beth Midrash- Ages 12-15, Boys would learn trade and study
rest of Tanakh (OT). (5) Beth Talmud- Ages 15-30 find a Rabbi to study
under; would memorize rest of OT to become Rabbi (if possible) at age 30 (Luke
3:23).
B. Jesus was recognized as a
Rabbi and “teacher” by friends and ENEMIES
(Mark 9:25,10:51; John 1:38,1:49,3:1,4:31,9:2,11:8,20:16;
Mat 26:25)
C. Rabbis would accept
disciples; NT records disciples of the PHARISEES
(Matthew 22:15-16).
D. Jesus showed Himself to be a
typical Rabbi through RABBINIC DIALOGUE
(Matthew 21:14-16,21:23-32,21:42,22:15-46; Mark
2:23-28)
E. A Talmid wants to know what
the Rabbi knows and to be what he IS

POINT 2- True disciples will be
committed to the Rabbi’s life TEACHINGS
A. The 1st type
of Rabbis were known as Torah (5 books of Moses) TEACHERS
B. The 2nd type of Rabbis were known as
Rabbis with Smikah (AUTHORITY)
(could teach NEW doctrine; authority received from 2
others with it)
C. Jesus was a Rabbi with Smikah
and taught new INTERPRETATIONS
(Luke 4:32; Matthew 7:28-29)
D. Jesus received His Smikah
from God and the Rabbi JOHN the BAPTIST
(Mat 21:23-32,28:18-20; John 7:15-17,8:28,12:49-50,15:15,3:26)

Jesus is looking for some disciples who will commit to His actions and
