“God the Deliverer” 4/29/07

Genesis 7:1-24

REVIEW- Buffet Religion. IS YOUR GOD THE BIBLICAL GOD?

Deliverance- the act of setting free or saving, as from misery, peril, or evil.

Over 270 flood stories amongst the different people groups of the world.

These EVENTS are FOUNDATIONAL. God wants us to know these!!

POINT 1- The flood demonstrates that God has a heart for DELIVERANCE

A. God the Deliverer brings salvation for all of Noah’s HOUSEHOLD

B. God the Deliverer provides safety for all of the world’s ANIMALS

C. God the Deliverer personally SHUTS all of them into the ark.

“And did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly; ⁶ and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly; ⁷ and delivered righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked ⁸ (for that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds) -- ⁹ then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment” 2 Peter 2:5-9

“you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, ¹⁰ and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.” 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10

POINT 2- The flood demonstrates that God has a heart for JUDGMENT

A. God the Judge brought forth the FLOOD

Worldwide flood for these reasons: (LA TIMES ARTICLE)

1) Extensive Language (7:21-22 “All Flesh”; 7:23 “Destroying All, ONLY Noah)

2) The necessity of building a boat; See story of Lot in Genesis 19.

3) Promise of God found in Genesis 9:11, “Never again will I flood”

4) Genealogy now comes only through Noah (Gen 10-11).

5) Evidence of sea fossils on mountain tops around the world.

B. God the Judge destroyed ALL LIVING THINGS

C. God the judge is still a God of MERCY

JAMES 4:1-8

“The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears, And delivers them out of all their troubles. ¹⁸ The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit. ¹⁹ Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the LORD delivers him out of them all.” Psalm 34:17-19
